At the TeacHaiti School, we believe that every child has a unique way of expressing him or herself. We encourage our students to use their imagination to express themselves in creative ways whether through writing, painting or wood carving. For the week of Saint Valentine, there was a competition among the classes to see who would express him or herself more creative, Roobens who is a 5th grader wrote a poem worth sharing with you. I did my best to translate the French version word for word. Please read it below. Thank you so much for allowing these kids to be in school and continue to use their God-given mind and talents.

EVERY CHILD COUNTS—A Poem by Roobens Fortune, 5th grade.
Indeed we are children. However, we are children with rights…..the right to discern wrong and bad. Unfortunately, we are usually the victims of our world.
We are the most mistreated, disrespected and rejected in our society. They forget that we are the future of our country.
Indeed every child counts regardless of his gender, skin color, or their country of origin.
Me, I am a Haitian child; I have the right to say that I count. I have the right to have food and right to an education.
Why do I say every child counts, whether they are young, poor, rich, black or white? It is because we are the future of our country.
Don’t mistreat the children, tomorrow they will be the ones helping you with your needs because—————EVERY CHILD COUNTS.

Many thanks—-We had a WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS PARTY.

We want to thank everyone who helped to make the TeacHaiti Christmas Party a success. The students had a great time singing, reciting poems, dancing and enjoying being children. We had over 500 people including children and their parents at the party. Everyone had enough to eat. Every TeacHaiti child received a gift because of your generosity. Words are not enough to thank you. Many thanks to our sponsors who made this tradition of spreading Christmas cheers continue. Jennifer and Jeff Carter, we thank you so much for your generosity.

Happy New Year

A message from Miquette to TeacHaiti sponsors:

As the Christmas season approaches, I’ve received many notes from sponsors asking how they can give their child a Christmas gift.

Beginning this year, we are not accepting gift items through the mail. This is due to the high expenses paid per pound to our mailing service, as well as the high fees required to get packages cleared through Haitian customs.

We are, however, throwing a big Christmas party for all TeacHaiti kids on December 17. All TeacHaiti kids will receive treats and enjoy fun activities there. However, if any sponsor desires to do something special for their child, we are accepting donations via Paypal which will be used to purchase an appropriate local gift for your child. This will have the added benefit of supporting local Haitian businesses as well. Just make the donation via Paypal and write “Christmas gift for (child’s name)” in the special instructions box. I will be sure to take many photos of our Christmas party!

The words “thank you” don’t fully express how grateful I am for your sponsorships. Mesi ampil!

Miquette Denie
TeacHaiti Founder

Thank you, thank you, sponsors. None of this would be possible if it were not for each of you providing for one of our students’ education.

She was a humble student, but had worked extremely hard and found success in her studies. She had a dream to become a nurse. She had finished high school several years earlier, but had been unable to figure out a way to pay for her post-secondary education. It is rare in Haiti to achieve a high school education, but even more shocking is the fact that 99% of Haitian high school grads do not go on to attend college. This is due exclusively to the financial hurdles.

I told Nadege I was sorry that our country had failed her. I sincerely regretted that she could not use her strengths and skills to help her people. Unfortunately, I had to tell her that TeacHaiti was not able to give college scholarships. She was heartbroken, and so was I. Being the assertive woman that she is, she returned in 2008 with the same request. I proposed the idea to the TeacHaiti board of directors in Minnesota, and, as always, they supported the idea. TeacHaiti sent three college students to school in 2008, and two have already graduated with lab technology degrees. Both are currently working.

Nadege’s Triumph

Last Sunday was an extremely proud day for me. In only three years, Nadege graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She has been first in her class since her freshman year. She graduated summa cum laude on Sunday in a class of over 60 students. I was so proud to hear her exquisite valedictory speech. I tried hard to hold back the tears of joy. During her address, she heaped thanks upon TeacHaiti. She is grateful that TeacHaiti believed in her competence and gave her a chance to make her nursing dreams come true.

Sponsors, thank you much for making Nadege’s dreams come true. We have added one competent nurse to the health care system in Haiti. I can say with confidence that Haiti is a better place because of her.

Mesi anpil!

Each person got a checkup, a visit with a dentist, and also had their weight and eyesight measured.
In her other hand is her newly-begun student health record. The medical team made a health record for each student so they can track health information (such as weight or eyesight) over time. In addition, the records will enable the church to determine which students require more extensive treatment (such as tooth extractions) and connect with local medical facilities to get the procedures needed.
After seeing the doctors and dentists, all patients received a hot lunch. Thank you, Fairfax Community Church! On behalf of our students, I am so grateful for the blessing you have given. For many, it was the first time ever to see a dentist. Mesi!

On Friday, April 29, Ben Kilpatrick encouraged the National Honor Society (NHS) students at Quisqueya Christian School (the place where I work) to organize a TeacHaiti sport field day for the TeacHaiti students. After several meetings with the NHS students, Ben, Art and myself had to plan the event, it was finally a reality on Friday, April 29. At 11:30 the Quisqueya drivers drove to the TeacHaiti School to pick up the students. Art organized all of the activities for the students. The NHS students prepared snacks and drinks for the students. The NHS also helped the students with their activities. The TH students loved the face painting activity. All of them wanted to have their face painted. At 3 pm, some of the TeacHaiti students went home but the majority stayed for the Qusiqueya basketball. The students all sat together and every time QCS made a shot, they were so enthusiastic. Cheering “Quisqueya, you are the best.” I think they brought much luck to the game because we won that game after losing so many in row. I just want to thank all of the Quisqueya Students, Ben, Art and the NHS students and our school director Steve Hershey for making this day a fun and memorable day for the students. They had so much fun.

As you know Saturday is my favorite day of the week because that is when I get to go to the School of hope and be part of the Art program and be around the students whom I love dearly. They drain my energy by 12pm but I am glad to be around them. A group of 7 students from QCS, my work place went with me. Not only because they are required to have 30 minutes community service hours but I think they genuinely want to come to the school and help. Many of them made necklaces which we use cereal boxes to make as well as other paper products.

I was particularly proud of my crochet students. I cannot believe how much they have learned and how fast they are learning the concept of crochering. We have 2 advanced students in the crochet class; their names are Hermite and Caride Aujour. They are crochering so fast and so beautifully now.

Also the painting class is going so well .The students are grasping the concept of painting so much faster now.

Wood carving in the culture class is going well. I was pleased to see Dachena and Shelda both in 4th grade working very hard carving their piece of wood.

Hence—–the pictures above.

I am so incredibly blessed to be part of these children’s lives.
